Real FPS from heavy modding Empty
PostSubject: Real FPS from heavy modding   Real FPS from heavy modding EmptyTue Feb 14, 2017 12:23 pm

There are many people who claims 60FPS on a fully modded FNV, FO4, Skryim. I've modded all three games to their MAX graphics in 4K, animations, characters, NPC, quest mods, ENB the whole 9 yards. My FPS always falls into the 25-40 FPS range. Eventually having to optimize textures to 2k, 1k, removing NPC, script heavy mods just to gain additional FPS. A heavy load order = low FPS? I just want to know if I'm alone as I see a lot of people claim 60 + 120 FPS.

I have a lot of mods, including ENB, graphical mods and HD texture packs. My average FPS is around 50 and total FPS ranges from ~40 to 60 depending the area I am in.

Keep in mind that some ENB's are really performance heavy without optimisation.

So... first, it's probably a mistake for anyone to try and do a TOTAL overhaul regardless of their HW. As the number of loose files builds up (even for those textures that are supposedly more optimized than vanilla textures) the more overhead is involved in things like load times and texture streaming. The more mods you use you'll start to feel massive shudders when transitioning into new cells because it's the game engine trying to catch up to you, made difficult by the sheer overhead of having so many loose files to find on your drive as opposed to having a nice neat compressed archive. If you store the mods on your hard drive and not your solid state then you'll notice the stuttering more because read/write latency for hard drives is so much higher. And yes, the resolution for the mods does matter and how often they are being used in the game. One specific item that is only loaded into a cell once? Yeah, you could probably do 4k if your care that much. But then when every NPC and cabbage has 4k textures and you're walking through a city is when your VRAM will start to suffer. Really though, 2k and 1k textures should be fine for anyone. I would say to start with an ENB (which often makes vanilla textures look quite good) and then ONLY replace the textures that bug you the most.

Outside of graphic mods, it really is just an exercise in testing out mods thoroughly before moving on. I think people often get in a hurry and look through the modding guides saying, "Whoa, this looks cool, this looks cool..." and they are throwing all this stuff into their game all willy nilly without understanding how it's affecting their game. I have a pretty decent computer and I always have to be very choosey about which mods I'm using. So I load up the game and then I'll 'coc' myself to parts of the game that I know are very heavy (like city areas in Skyrim and FO4) and then I'll fly around very quickly to see how the game handles the mods and if I'm getting a ton of fps drops. Next, I'll go to a place like Riverwood and fly across the map from there to see how the game handles transitioning through exterior cells. If it doesn't stutter too much and doesn't crash then I'm probably in a good place.

I can run 4K textures, ENBs and basically every graphical mod out there.

The killer is not ENBs or textures, but it is GRASS. Dead version of Vurt's Flora Overhaul will do nothing in terms of performance, but it will if you install the FERTILE version. My game goes from solid 58-60 to 20-30 fps within a second of it rendering. Same goes with Skyrim.

Oh right, I totally forgot the nasty grass.

It's good to use Flora Overhaul dead version, I'm using it too. It totally kills your FPS when there is so much going on around you, all that grass swinging on the ground.

I used to have a HUGE problem with FPS in my Fallouts and Elder Scrolls games. I could barely walk down a street or heaven forbid try and get into combat. Any and all mods have to be taken out pretty much.

This single program changed all Bethesda games, and all games in general I had trouble with getting a decent FPS on.

Give it a thorough read, watch the video, and install. It worked wonders for me, hopefully it can for you to.

When reading those posts in the mod page, it's full of people who had their game broken. I wonder how it's going to work.

Personally I'm always pretty sceptical about everything which has even a slight chance to break my game / computer / whatever. 4GB patch is a good alternative to get your game work better.

Yeah I am pretty much the same as you. I really don't like major changes or things that have the ability to break anything. But as with a lot of people on the Nexus, especially new or inexperienced people, they might've not done something right. Essentially, this is the next step above 4GB patch. If you have a lot of mods, then at this point, you probably need more than 4GB to process it all. This essentially just removes the cap entirely. No trickery or weird downloads necessary, just a CFF Explorer and one setting changed.

I am not extremely tech savvy in this area of play but I can tell you from firsthand experience, this mod changed what games I play, opening up games that I used to not be able to because of lag. Maybe someone more technical then me can explain how or why this works, but if you're riding on last bets OP, it is worth a shot.
